RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication. It is a technology used by web users to keep updated on their favorite sites. Instead of bookmarking websites and hopping from one site to another, RSS allows you to keep track of your all favorite websites from one place.
Here’s a video that explains how RSS works:
How to use RSS:
1- First, you’ll need to get an RSS reader, where you’ll add and track all your favorite site’s subscriptions. There are many readers to choose from but I find Google’s Reader to be the best.
2- The universal RSS icon is
. You’ve probably seen it on the top of your web browser, as most browsers offer built-in RSS readers now a days. Clicking on that icon will give you options on how you’d like to subscribe to the site:
Clicking on the blue RSS icon on the right sidebar will take you to this page…
You’ll find many subscription options, it is almost automatic once you’ve chosen your reader. Note that you must have
a reader account before you can subscribe.
After you’ve subscribed to your favorite sites, whenever you want to check on the new updates, all you have to do is login
to your new reader. Here’s a screenshot of my Google reader:
You’ll see on the left a list of my favorite sites, all I have to do is click on a name and the website will appear on the right side of the reader.
Why use RSS?
Good question, there are many reasons why:
1- You save a lot of time reading all your favorite news from one place.
2- If you’re still using bookmarks, you will miss new updates if you don’t check them.
3- Sometimes it’s hard to track what’s new and what’s not on a website. With an RSS reader, it will point to you exactly
what is new and what isn’t. What you have read and what you haven’t.
Once you’ve started using RSS you’ll begin asking yourself “How the HELL did I miss on that!?”
Was all that TOO TECHY for you?
No problem. There’s an option other than RSS. Email updates!
Want to receive United Bloggers of Arabia updates right to your email? Follow this link and enter your email address.
Once you’ve done so, you’ll receive an email that’ll ask you to verify your email address. Once you’ve verified.. you’re all set and as soon as we’ve updated here.. you’ll receive an email.
Most of sites offer email subscriptions, it’s a much safer choice if you’re not sure about RSS yet.
